“The murder rate in Scotland is the fastest rising in western Europe and the sixth fastest in the world, according to a shocking new report by the United Nations.

Despite a series of government and police initiatives to curb the death toll from the country’s booze and blades culture, the number of killings rose by more than a third.

The murder rate in Scotland now stands at 2.13 deaths per 100,000 people, the joint highest in western Europe with Finland and Portugal.

Between 2005 and 2006, the period covered in the UN report, the homicide rate rose from 1.59, an increase of 34%.

Glasgow emerged as the most violent city in western Europe with a murder rate of 5 deaths per 100,000, up from 4.49 the previous year.

The rise in Scotland was the sixth biggest in the world, according to the UN survey of 79 nations, behind Bahrain (73%), Jordan (45%), Tajikistan (43%), Armenia (37%) and Mauritius (34%).

Most of the 109 homicides were recorded in the west of Scotland, which has a long history of gang-related knife crime.”
