“I tend to think of those foreign people who covered songs and aiming to be Utaite as weeabos. I also tend to think Utaite = Japanese.”
I really, really, really, REALLY hate the idea that having an interest in music that’s not from your native country is wrong in some way. Classical singers perform in languages that aren’t their own, usually without being fluent in many of them.
Point is, just because I sing in Japanese doesn’t mean I WANT to be Japanese or that I’m somehow unhappy with where I was born or the language I was raised to speak. It’s really just ignorant to think that way.Actually adding to that it’s not just about singing songs in Japanese. In my case I’m going to do a bachelors degree in Japanese studies after summer. Also this wouldn’t meant that I’m a weaboo and that I want to be Japanese.
It’s being interested in a language and culture.
What’s also strange to me is that people always complain so much about people singing/learning Japanese.
I never really see many comments on people singing in English or French or wanting to learn an other language than their own, going like: ” OH YOU WANT TO LEARN FRENCH YOU ARE SUCH A FRENCHBOO ” or ” ENGLISH IS NOT YOUR MOTHER TONGUE YOU JUST WANT TO BE ENGLISH. ”
Yeah. It’s just a fucking language. Everyone has their right to be interested in whatever language they want.
